The redhead goby (Elacatinus puncticulatus, also classified as Tigrigobius puncticulatus) is a tiny, vibrant marine fish known for its bright red head, translucent body, and role as a cleaner fish that picks parasites off larger reef species. Native to the Eastern Pacific from the Gulf of California to Ecuador, it grows up to 2 inches (5 cm) long.
Aquarium Care
  • Tank Size: Well-suited for nano tanks or larger reef aquariums, with a 10-gallon minimum requirement.
  • Temperament: Peaceful and hardy, making them great for beginners. They can be kept singly or as a mated pair, though they may display mild aggression toward other members of the same species if cramped.
  • Water Conditions: Maintain a stable pH of 8.1–8.4 and temperatures between 74°F–80°F. A tight-fitting lid is required because they are known jumpers.
  • Diet: Carnivorous. Captive-bred specimens readily accept prepared foods like flakes, pellets, and frozen meaty foods including brine shrimp and Mysis shrimp.
  • Compatible Tankmates: Keep with other small, peaceful fish like clownfish, firefish, cardinalfish, and small blennies. Avoid large predators or aggressive species (like groupers or triggerfish) that can swallow them whole.
